Recently, I came across this quote from the comedy series, The Wonder Years:

"Growing up happens in a heartbeat. One day you're in diapers; the next day you're gone. But the memories of childhood stay with you for the long haul"

And, with a flash of light, lot of memories flooded – memories that made me who I am, the memories that were the lessons I learnt by observing. And, my first lesson on what Servant Leadership truly is, came from my mom. Although there are several instances, but I want to share one specifically – may be because I had not valued it then, but it is what defines me now…

I used to study at night. My mom, who is a home maker, would often come and ask me – "Do you want tea / coffee?" or "Are you hungry?" or "You want to eat Maggi?" – Hahaha – Don't ask me why only eatables? 😉 (A story for some other time, hehe) And at times, I would ask her to wake me up in 30 mins since I was feeling sleepy. And, exactly after 30 mins, she would be there, with a smile and lovingly waking me up to study...

Dedicating to my Mom

What was she doing really? In her own capacity, she was ensuring that I had everything in place for me to effectively achieve what I have set out to.

Whole day she was working, taking care of all the needs of everyone in the family and night, too, she dedicated to me. Why? Simple reason – She wanted the BEST for US. She wanted All of US to be Successful. She was ensuring that WE had All the Resources to accomplish what we are trying to do. THIS IS TRUE SERVANT LEADERSHIP.

A servant leader:

  1. Believes that their existence is in the service of others.
  2. Puts the needs of his / her team first
  3. Believes in building and growing others.
  4. Does everything for the team to be successful – provide resources, removes obstacles, removes distractions
  5. Coaches the team, guides them to be of service to others and still be able to achieve their targets...
